Dr. Sonya and the team at Sea to Sky Smiles is dedicated to providing personalized care tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring that every treatment plan is as effective and efficient as possible.
Orthodontics is a wonderful profession: it is constantly stimulating and always challenging me to provide the best treatment experience and deliver the best results.
It also requires me to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in all aspects of patient care, including technology, appliances, and treatment modalities. With all of these daily requirements, it is impossible to become bored or complacent with the profession.
One of the most rewarding aspects of orthodontics, for me, is seeing and getting to know so many wonderful people, from diverse backgrounds, every day. I get to develop a rapport with each of them, and their families, on a personal level, and be part of their lives at an exciting time.
Because orthodontic treatment is generally a few years in length, and I see most patients about once a month, we have time to talk and learn about each other. At each visit I see the changes in my patient: in their mouth, in their appearance, and in their self-esteem.
The best “thank you,” to me, is the patient who hardly smiled when they first started treatment now beaming with teeth and a smile they love. This new self-confidence goes a long way in every part of the patient’s life, from school to work and personal relationships, as another tool that helps them reach their full potential.

Continuing education is one of my passions. It is a way of ensuring that the best treatment modalities are available for each patient. In addition to keeping me at the forefront of new and emerging techniques, materials, and technologies, continuing education has an additional benefit: it is a way of communicating with colleagues and product developers, as well as researchers.
I complete a range of advanced orthodontic courses throughout the year. I also participate in the Orthopack Study Club, a radiology study club, and attend the Pacific Academy of Dental Specialties yearly lecture series.
I am an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, teaching Year 2 & 3 graduate orthodontic students in Cephalometrics and 3-D Radiology. I also serve as an Orthodontic Team Member on the Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Clinic at British Columbia Children’s Hospital.

Giving Back
I think that community involvement is very important. It connects you to the greater community and makes you aware of specific needs and how you can best help others.
I am active in the ALS Society and have put on fundraising events for them. Additionally, Whistler Orthodontic Center provides a yearly scholarship to our local high school for two promising students to help offset their university costs.
